Introduction

What I Help With

Services

Why Work With Me

Featured Speciality: Conflict, Communication & Emotional Safety

Most couples don't fall apart because of one big event — they fall apart because they get stuck in repeating conflict patterns they don't know how to break. I specialise in helping you slow reactive communication, navigate shutdowns and overwhelm, reduce defensiveness, understand your conflict cycle, and talk about hard things without hurting each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer online sessions?
Yes! I offer secure video counselling via Zoom for clients anywhere in Australia and worldwide. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person — and often more convenient for busy couples.
Do I need a referral to book?
No referral is needed. You can book directly through my online booking system. If you'd like to claim Medicare rebates, you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.
What should I expect in the first session?
The first session is about understanding your situation and goals. I'll ask questions to learn about your relationship history and current challenges, then outline how we might work together. It's a safe space to share.
How many sessions will we need?
Every couple is different. Some find clarity in 4-6 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. I'll give you an honest assessment after our first meeting.
What are your fees?
Individual and couples sessions are $230 for 50 minutes or $330 for 90 minutes. Medicare rebates may apply with a GP referral for individual sessions. Visit my Fees & Rebates page for full details.

My Story

For more than thirty years, I've dedicated my career to helping individuals and couples find clarity, connection, and courage in the face of life's most complex challenges. Across over 30,000 sessions, I've witnessed the extraordinary strength of the human spirit — our ability to grow, heal, and love more deeply when given the right support and direction.

But this work is also personal.

I was diagnosed with dyslexia well into my professional life, after years of wondering why I needed to work twice as hard to do what others seemed to manage with ease. Then, in 2024, came another turning point — a formal diagnosis of ADHD. That discovery brought relief and understanding, but also a wave of grief for what might have been if I'd been recognised and supported earlier.

Through that journey, I learned that compassion and insight — not perfection — are what allow us to heal. I no longer see my neurodivergence as a limitation; it's a source of creativity, empathy, and resilience that shapes how I connect with others and guide them through their own challenges. This lived experience directly informs my work with ADHD couples.

My practice blends evidence-based approaches such as the Gottman Method, Attachment-Based Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). My style is warm, grounded, and practical — offering both emotional insight and clear direction. I work with couples rebuilding after infidelity, individuals learning to communicate without fighting, and neurodiverse clients seeking self-acceptance and relational harmony.

Many couples come to me caught in repetitive conflict patterns — having the same fight over and over without resolution. Others struggle with destructive communication habits that erode trust over time. My role is to help you understand what's really happening beneath the surface and build new ways of connecting.

Qualifications

Personal Life

When I'm not working, I recharge by being outdoors, at the gym, and by sharing good food and conversation with family and friends, enjoying live music, or spending time with my therapy dog, Lexi, whose calm presence reminds me daily that healing often begins with connection.

I believe that with the right understanding, compassion, and guidance, it's never too late to heal, to grow, and to rewrite the story of your life — with courage, clarity, and hope.

Signs Your Relationship Needs Help: Is It Worth Saving?

Healthy relationships don't fall apart overnight. They unravel in the quiet moments—the conversation you didn't finish, the bid for connection that went unnoticed, the same argument surfacing for the hundredth time until you both stopped trying to resolve it.

You're lying next to someone you once couldn't wait to see, and somehow you feel more alone than if you were actually alone.

You're not failing at your relationship. You're caught in patterns neither of you chose. And with the right guidance, those patterns can shift.

When Should We Seek Couples Counselling?

Warning signs that indicate it's time to seek help:

How Couples Counselling Works

Couples counselling provides a structured, safe space to understand each other's perspectives, break destructive patterns, and rebuild connection. Using evidence-based approaches like the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), I help couples:

Understanding ADHD in Relationships

ADHD doesn't just affect the person who has it—it affects the entire relationship dynamic. Common challenges include:

My Lived Experience

As someone diagnosed with ADHD in 2024 (after a lifetime of wondering why I thought differently), I bring deep personal understanding to this work. I know what it's like to feel misunderstood, to struggle with things that seem easy for others, and to grieve for what might have been with earlier support.

This lived experience, combined with 30+ years of clinical practice, allows me to help ADHD couples with genuine insight and practical strategies that actually work.

Expert insights on relationships, communication, and connection from Linda Thomson.

Article: Why Couples Keep Arguing About the Same Things (And How to Stop)

URL: https://lindathomson.com.au/blog/same-arguments

Every fight feels the same because it's not about the dishes—it's about unresolved emotions. The pursuer-withdrawer dynamic is one of the most common patterns I see: one partner seeks connection through conversation (pursuing), while the other needs space to process (withdrawing). Neither is wrong, but without understanding this cycle, couples get stuck having the same argument over and over.

Article: The Four Horsemen: How Conflict Turns Toxic

URL: https://lindathomson.com.au/blog/four-horsemen

Dr. John Gottman identified four communication patterns that predict relationship breakdown with over 90% accuracy: Criticism (attacking character, not behaviour), Defensiveness (refusing responsibility), Contempt (expressing disgust or superiority), and Stonewalling (shutting down completely). Recognising these patterns is the first step to changing them.

Article: How Unresolved Feelings Keep Relationships Stuck

URL: https://lindathomson.com.au/blog/unresolved-feelings

Unprocessed emotions don't fade—they store in the body and re-emerge when triggered. A three-part framework can help complete what's unfinished: (1) Acknowledge the feeling without judgment, (2) Understand its origin and meaning, and (3) Express or release it safely. Only then can you respond to the present moment clearly.
