What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the term used to describe individuals with different brain functions than a standard “normal” person. These types of individuals can include those who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Asperger Syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other neurodiverse characteristics. Neurodiversity discovered at an early stage in life gets a greater chance of getting the support it needs to grow. However, there are times when an neurodivergent individual reaches adulthood before they discover about their neurodivergence. This means that they have been neglected, gone through life's adversities and may have gone through all the trauma before figuring out that there is nothing wrong with them after all. How can a coach or counsellor help someone with a Neurodiverse Condition?

Noticeable in some adult neurodiverse individuals is their discomfort and anxiety in social situations. And this is caused by a long time of having to receive unnecessary stress from people who unable to understand neurodiversity. These neurodiverse individuals have spend a great part of their life being misunderstood and be hurt because of that. These blows can last for a very long time and can seep in other areas in a person's life. To heal, a coach can help neurodivergents take control of their lives by helping them identify their personal strengths, challenges, goals, and next steps. Coaching is a process that can create real change in an individual’s life, and it is a valuable service for all people. Coaching can help individuals with neurodiverse conditions build confidence, self-esteem, and a healthy self-image. Many people with neurodiverse conditions experience social challenges that result from low self-esteem. Coaching can help individuals with neurodiverse conditions build confidence by helping them understand their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. Coaching also helps individuals with neurodiverse conditions regulate emotions and make healthy decisions. Many individuals with neurodiverse conditions struggle with impulsivity and poor decision making. Coaching can help individuals with neurodiverse conditions make healthy decisions by helping them identify their goals and understand their emotions.

Neurodiverse conditions are challenging. It is important to remember that neurodiversity is not a disability. This can be frustrating to those who experience it. However, it does not mean that one will have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Thus, it is important to find support and help in your life. A coach or counsellor can provide this as they have experience working with neurodiverse individuals and can help to navigate these challenges and make them more manageable.  Effective communication and support are important for neurodiverse people.
